Tips from A Tri-Cities Family Photographer: Family Photo Guide

Planning your family photo session is exciting, but one of the biggest questions that comes up is: what should we wear? Choosing the perfect outfits for your family photos can make a huge difference in how your images turn out. As a Tri-Cities family photographer, I’ve helped many families create beautiful, timeless portraits by guiding them through outfit selection. Here are some of my top tips to help you coordinate your family’s wardrobe for your next session!

Advice from a Tri-Cities Photographer

1. Start with a Color Palette

Instead of matching outfits exactly, choose a cohesive color palette. Soft neutrals, earth tones, and muted pastels tend to photograph beautifully and create a timeless look. If you’re looking for a bit more color, jewel tones or rich autumn shades can also work well. Stick to three or four complementary colors that work together to ensure a coordinated yet natural feel.

2. Avoid Clashing Patterns and Logos

Patterns can add visual interest, but too many can be overwhelming. If someone in the family is wearing a pattern (like florals, plaid, or stripes), try to keep the rest of the outfits solid or subtly textured. Avoid logos and graphics that can distract from the main focus—your beautiful family!

3. Consider the Location and Season

Think about where your photos will be taken and what colors complement the surroundings. For example, if your session is in a field or park, warm neutrals, greens, and soft blues blend naturally. If you’re planning winter family photos, cozy textures like knit sweaters and layers in deep, warm tones work well.

4. Dress for Comfort and Confidence

Your family should feel comfortable in their outfits so that everyone can relax and be themselves during the session. Avoid anything too tight, restrictive, or itchy. Flowy dresses, soft knits, and well-fitted (but not too tight) clothing tend to look great and allow for movement.

5. Coordinate, Don’t Match

Gone are the days of everyone wearing the exact same outfit! Instead of all white tops and jeans, mix it up with different shades and textures that complement each other. For example, if dad is wearing a navy button-down, mom could wear a soft cream dress, and the kids could wear outfits that incorporate those colors in different tones.

6. Think About Layers and Accessories

Layers like cardigans, scarves, or denim jackets add depth and variety to your photos. Accessories such as hats, belts, and jewelry can also enhance the overall look—just make sure they don’t overpower the outfit.

7. Keep Footwear in Mind

Shoes matter! Avoid overly casual sneakers unless they fit the vibe of your session. Neutral-colored shoes, boots, or simple flats are great choices that won’t distract from the overall look.

8. Plan Ahead

Lay out your outfits a few days before your session to see how they look together. Try everything on ahead of time to ensure the best fit and make adjustments if needed. This will help you feel more prepared and relaxed on the day of your shoot.

9. Let Personalities Shine

While it’s important to coordinate, don’t be afraid to let your family’s unique style come through. If your child has a favorite bow or a special pair of shoes, find a way to incorporate them so they feel comfortable and confident.
